Maths is used to model the weather and make predictions about temperatures, windspeed etc. – this helps send firefighters and fire prevention mechanisms to the right place at the right time. We can also make models of how fires grow and move, to predict where a fire may go.

There is an news article here describing some of the active areas of research: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-10-13/maths-is-the-latest-weapon-against-extreme-bushfires/7929086

Sadly maths can only do so much to help climate change. It can give us predictions about the effect of our actions, but unless we use that information to change our behavior then maths can only help us so much.
