I did a degree in Engineering, then I took a job with a research group in Trinity College. I had a research plan of my own when I applied for the job, which the professors really liked. That plan didn’t work out (which was OK), but by that stage I had started my PhD which took me down the path I’m on at the moment. I just finished my PhD and I’m working out my plan for the next step.

General piece of advice, do projects on what interests you. I write a lot code because it’s fun for me. Find a way to do things that are fun for you. It’ll help you to build a skill set, gives you a portfolio when you are looking for work, and will help you to start developing ideas of you own so you can start your own professional projects, rather than always working on someone elses.

We do offer work experience, but you’d have to come to Ireland 🙂

I’ve always loved maths, languages and music (since I was 3 or so).

For my final project in Engineering, I wanted to do either telecommunication systems or acoustics. The telecommunication professor didn’t have any projects for that year, so I went to acoustic department where I started to do processing and analysis of speech (recording speech and then analysing the shape of different speech waves).

Afterwards I was doing a little bit of speech recognition (transforming speech into text), and then found out about machine translation (transforming a text in one language into a text in another) where I did my PhD and which is still my main topic.
