Question: how important is maths in sport. .

quite important! Statistics can be v important when assessing what makes a good player in football or baseball or cricket for example (the book / film Moneyball is excellent on this).
Mechanics can be important in designing equipment such as bikes, boats, skis… and in determining what the best position is for a skier or cyclist to minimise drag from the air etc…

athlete? important, but probably unconscious/instinctive. BUT counting caloris, power/strength performance, training session is also useful
coach? esssential to working out programmes
betting fan? essential. bookies win in long run, but maths for how much you are prepared to lose
